The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) based in Washington, D.C. The Washington Capitals compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference along with New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and New York Islanders. The Caps have three intense rivalries all dating back to the late 70s / early 80s, with the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and Philadelphia Flyers.
The Washington Capitals play their home games at the Capital One Arena based in Washington, which opened in 1997. The team were established in 1974 and their home games were originally held at the Capital Centre in Maryland, which they called home for 23 years. The Capital Centre was built specifically for the team along with the Washington Wizards (known as the Washington Bullets at the time) who now share the Capital One Arena with them. The Capital One Arena has a capacity of 18,506 for its ice hockey matches, and as well as being a shared home with the NBA’s Washington Wizards, it’s also home to the Arena Football League’s Washington Valor and the Georgetown University men’s basketball team. There are also concerts hosted at the arena with performances from the likes of Carrie Underwood, Post Malone and The Chainsmokers.
Washington, DC has a great food scene. Half Smokes (Half pork/half beef sausages) were invented in DC. The best are at Ben’s Chili Bowl which has been around since 1958. Also, DC is known for its Ethiopian food. Many Ethiopian restaurants can be found in the U Street Corridor along 9th street.
